2D100 opposed-piston diesel

The 2D100 is the ten-cylinder opposed-piston two-stroke diesel used in Soviet TE3-family diesel locomotives, and it is the most architecturally unusual engine in the preset library. There is no cylinder head: two pistons run towards each other in a single 207 mm bore, one uncovering the intake ports and the other the exhaust, giving true uniflow scavenging and an exceptionally clean gas exchange. The arrangement needs two crankshafts geared together, which is why it never became common — but thermodynamically it is excellent, and the same idea is behind today's OPOC engine research. Modelling it shows why the architecture keeps coming back.

Notes for modelling

  • Uniflow scavenging is selected in the preset; it is what makes the opposed-piston layout worth its mechanical complexity.
  • The stroke is per piston — the combustion chamber is formed by two pistons approaching each other.
  • Ten cylinders at 850 rpm: multiply the per-cylinder result for the full locomotive engine.
